Blue Tongue Skink
Tiliqua scincoides intermedia
The Northern Blue-Tongued Skink is easy to recognize thanks to its wide, flattened body, short legs, and, of course, its bright blue tongue. Native to the tropical savannas and open woodlands of northern Australia, it uses that blue tongue as a defense, flashing it suddenly to startle predators. These skinks grow up to 2 feet long and have smooth, shiny scales patterned in bands of brown, tan, and orange. They are omnivores, feeding on a mix of plants, insects, snails, and other small invertebrates. Despite their bulky appearance, they’re quite gentle and often spend their time slowly roaming in search of food or a sunny spot to bask.

When he's not busy meeting guests or taking one of his many naps, you'll usually find Leo sitting by his food bowl, patiently waiting for a snack. Don't let his innocent face fool you, he's a master at convincing people he's starving, even though he's already been fed! Somehow, he still manages to fool us almost every day.
