Rescues & Rehabilitation

The Topsail Aquarium was built on a foundation of compassion, conservation, and second chances. Many of the animals that call our aquarium home were rescued or surrendered by previous owners who could no longer care for them. Whenever possible, we strive to provide these animals with safe, enriching, and permanent homes where they can thrive while helping us educate the public about wildlife and conservation.

Animal Surrenders

If you have an animal that you can no longer care for, we encourage you to contact us before releasing it into the wild. Releasing captive animals can have serious consequences for both the animal and the local ecosystem.

Because we are a small facility with limited space, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to accept every surrendered animal. However, if we are unable to provide a home ourselves, we will do our best to connect you with other facilities, licensed rehabilitators, or experienced keepers who may be able to help.

To inquire about surrendering an animal, please email us with the species, approximate age and size, current health status, and any relevant history.

Wildlife Rehabilitation

The Topsail Aquarium maintains all required state and federal permits necessary for wildlife rehabilitation. While our rehabilitation program continues to grow, we are committed to providing the highest standard of care possible. We work closely with an exceptional network of veterinarians, licensed wildlife rehabilitators, conservation organizations, and partner facilities to ensure injured and orphaned wildlife receive the treatment they need.

Our ultimate goal is always rehabilitation and release whenever possible, giving native wildlife the opportunity to return to their natural habitats. Every successful release represents another step toward protecting North Carolina's incredible biodiversity.
