Williams’ Dwarf Gecko

Lygodactylus williamsi

The Williams' Dwarf Gecko is one of the most striking lizards in the world. Adult males display brilliant electric blue bodies with vivid orange undersides, while females and juveniles are typically green or bronze. Despite their dazzling appearance, these geckos grow to only about 4 inches in length.

Native to a tiny area of eastern Tanzania, Williams' dwarf geckos have an incredibly specialized lifestyle. In the wild, they are found almost exclusively on the Pandanus screw pine, relying on these trees for shelter, breeding, and protection. Because their entire population is confined to such a small geographic area and a single type of habitat, they are especially vulnerable to deforestation and habitat destruction.

Habitat loss and illegal collection for the pet trade caused wild populations to decline rapidly, leading to increased protections for the species. Today, responsible captive breeding programs have greatly reduced the demand for wild-caught animals and play an important role in conserving this remarkable gecko.

Lapis’ Story: Lapis joined the Topsail Aquarium family in 2023 after retiring as a breeding male from a private breeder. As he reached the end of his breeding career, we were given the opportunity to provide him with a permanent home. Since then, Lapis has become an incredible ambassador for his species, helping us educate thousands of visitors about the threats these animals face in the wild and the importance of accredited conservation breeding programs in protecting endangered species for future generations.
