Chacoan Horned Frog

MEET DUMPLING

The Chacoan Horned Frog is known for its enormous mouth, which helps it gulp down prey nearly half its size—even mice! Found mainly in the dry grasslands and scrub forests of the Gran Chaco region in South America, it spends much of its life buried underground to escape the heat. This frog can grow up to 8 inches long and has a round, squat body with a camouflaged pattern that blends into the leaf litter. Often nicknamed the “Pacman Frog” because of its appetite and shape, it ambushes insects, small reptiles, and other frogs with lightning-fast strikes. Though it looks lazy, it’s a surprisingly effective hunter.
