Woma Python

MEET WALDO

Native to the arid regions of Australia, the Woma python is a large nocturnal ambush predator found in deserts, grasslands, shrublands, and open woodlands with sandy soils where it can easily burrow and shelter underground during the day. Females can grow up to 8 feet long and weigh over 10 pounds, while males are typically smaller, remaining under 5 feet in length. Woma pythons are specialized lizard hunters, though they also consume small mammals, birds, eggs, and even venomous snakes thanks to their natural resistance to snake venom. They are recognized by their smooth scales, broad flattened body, narrow head, small eyes, orange colored head, and dark scales surrounding the eyes. Their thin, pointed tail acts as a lure, which they wiggle to attract prey within striking distance. Although currently listed as a species of Least Concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, some wild populations are declining due to habitat loss and predation by invasive species such as foxes and feral cats.
